NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball dropped its contest to in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana, 16-2, Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (22-24) and Lions (29-15) each scored in the first inning, but the Wave did not cross the plate again until Jarret DeHart's solo home run in the sixth. SLU led 6-1 after three innings, then added 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Â
"I just thought we looked tired," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "I didn't see the spirit we're looking for every time we step out to play. I don't know if we had cracked something a little bit more in the first, if that changes the tide of it, but it just wasn't our night. (SLU) played with good energy and did a good job. I don't know if it was the emotional weekend (at ECU) in front, but nothing was up to par tonight, and the scoreboard reflected it."
Â
DeHart's solo homer to straightaway center field to lead off the bottom of the sixth was his team-leading 10th of the season. Tulane plated its first run when Jake Willsey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning to score Lex Kaplan, who had drawn a walk. Hunter Williams followed with a single and DeHart walked to load the bases with one out, but the Wave was only able to get one run in the inning.
Â
SLU totaled 16 runs on 15 hits and nine walks, and benefitted from three Tulane defensive miscues, including two that allowed three runs to score in the eighth inning. In the first inning, three singles led to a run, a double and a single drove in three runs in the second, and a triple and sacrifice fly made it 6-1 after the third frame. The Lions scored seven runs in the seventh using four hits and four free passes.
Â
Tulane used seven pitchers in the game. Ross Massey started and pitched 2.0 innings, falling to 0-7 on the season. Chase Solesky was effective for 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. Payton Robinson pitched 5.0 innings in relief and improved to 3-0 for SLU.
Â
The Green Wave plays host to UCF this weekend in a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
