MOBILE, Ala. – Tulane women's golf started off the 2017-18 season with a bang, taking first place at the USA Intercollegiate by a 10-stroke margin.
Tulane closed the tournament strong, posting a 279 (-9) in the final round to finish with an 857 (-7). Tulane outdistanced Lamar (867, +3), UAB (877, +13) and host South Alabama (877, +13) to bring home the program's first tournament trophy since sharing the 2014 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational title with UNLV. The Green Wave's final round score was the team's lowest round since tallying a 271 in the second round of the 2015 UCF Challenge.
"We had some goals for our team coming in. I think we accomplished them and stuck to them," head coach Lorne Don said. "Obviously today was just a phenomenal round. We got off to such a quick start. We had all five players were under par through six holes and we just kind of maintained that throughout."
The Wave caught fire in the final round with all four countable scores coming in at par or better, paced by junior Sofia Goicoechea's 68 (-4) and sophomore Gabrielle Correia's 69 (-3). Goicoechea blazed the Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove on Monday, dropping five birdies in her first six holes and adding two more birdies on the back nine. Her 68 was the lowest 18-hole score for a Tulane player since Emily Penttilä's 66 in the final round of the 2016 Hurricane Invitational.
Correia and freshman Jennifer Rosenberg led the way for the Olive and Blue, each carded a 215 (-1) to tie for seventh among the 74-player field. Rosenberg, who birdied her first collegiate hole on Saturday, and Goicoechea put up second-round 70s (-2) to help move the Green Wave into contention for the team title. Correia and sophomore Haydyn Gibson started things off for Tulane with 71s (-1) to open play on Saturday. Goicoechea and Gibson finished the 54-hole event tied for 12th at 218 (+2), while junior Laura Munoz finished 18th at 221 (+5).
Up next, Tulane travels to Highland Park, Ill. on Oct. 2-3 for the 2017 Windy City Collegiate Classic at the Northmoor Country Club.
