EL PASO, Texas - Turnovers told the story on Wednesday night for the Tulane men's basketball team as UTEP flexed its muscles in a 75-47 Conference USA win at the Don Haskins Center. The Green Wave turned the ball over 23 times in the loss while UTEP (10-5, 3-0 C-USA) had just eight miscues.
More debilitating than the turnovers were the points off turnovers as the Miners outpaced Tulane 24-4 in that category.
"This has to be one of the better teams in Conference USA," Tulane coach Dave Dickerson said. "They have a lot of experience with four senior starters and one junior starter. They are big and strong and they were very physical. I don't see a team in our league coming down here and beating them."
Despite shooting a solid 46.7 percent (21-of-45) from the field, Tulane (4-11, 0-3) saw the Miners bury 51.7 percent (31-of-60) of their own shots. UTEP also edged the Wave on the glass, 30-27, including 13 offensive rebounds. The Miners added 22 assists and 15 steals.
"We competed, we played hard; we were just outmatched," Dickerson said. "We showed good character by coming out and playing for 40 minutes against an excellent team."
The tone was set in the first half with turnovers as the Green Wave turned the ball over 15 times with UTEP capitalizing with 16 points off those turnovers. A David Gomez jumper gave Tulane an 8-7 lead with 16:05 on the clock, but that quickly turned into a 21-13 deficit with 7:22 to go. Andrew Garcia pulled the Wave within eight at 28-20, but the Greenies went scoreless for the final 4:18 of the half as UTEP pushed it to 34-21 at the break.
The two teams traded baskets through the first 12 minutes of the second half. After a dunk and a turnaround jumper off the glass from Quincy Davis, Tulane trailed 56-40 with 7:35 to go. However, UTEP rattled off nine unanswered points to put the game away, building a 65-40 advantage with 4:11 on the clock.
Davis finished with 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wave. UTEP had four players in double figures, led by Marrero, La., and Higgins High product Jason Williams, who scored 17 points with seven rebounds.
"We just need to get to the next practice, get ready for the next game," Dickerson said. "We need to concentrate on coming out Saturday and doing the same thing on our home court. We need our home fans, especially the students to come out and give us a lift."
The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday evening, hosting East Carolina at Fogelman Arena at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 504-247-1240 or 247-1241, online at TulaneGreenWave.com, or by visiting the Tulane Box Office, now located at Fogelman Arena.
