NEW ORLEANS- After a rough road loss to Louisiana State Wednesday night, the Tulane baseball club is looking to get back in the win column as they take on Southern Miss in Conference USA action in Hattiesburg, Miss. Tulane (26-19, 7-8 C-USA) will visit the Golden Eagles for a three-game set beginning Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
The club has continued to swing the bats well, with consistent returns from junior Josh Prince, who was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List earlier today, in addition to being named as the Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association for his efforts in last week's contests. Prince currently leads the team with a .375 average that includes four home runs, 12 doubles in addition to a team-high 38 stolen bases, which also puts him in third place nationally. The shortstop from Sulphur, La. also paces the club with a .498 on-base percentage.
Freshman catcher Jeremy Schaffer has also stayed a dependable source of offense, with the rookie from Bellaire, Texas batting .325 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI while also tallying 13 runners caught stealing. Utility man Steve Moritz has also been swinging the bat well, batting .409 in his last five games with two doubles and 5 RBI. Senior Sam Honeck continues to pace the club with his 15 home runs and 63 RBI, placing him in the top 10 nationally for runs batted in.
From the mound, the Green Wave arms sport a 4.57 team ERA while having thrown a combined 397.2 innings of service, logging 294 strikeouts and holding opposing bats to a .266 average. Tulane will send a trio of right-handers to the hill this weekend, with senior Jonathan Garrett facing off against USM's JR Ballinger (4-1, 3.99 ERA) to open the series. Garrett owns a 3.98 ERA, having tossed 43.0 innings this season, while striking out 30 in his 10 appearances. Ballinger, a junior right-hander, has thrown 49.2 innings while striking out 38 and issuing 21 walks. The C-USA foes will follow it up with Josh Zeid (5-0, 4.02 ERA) for Tulane and the Golden Eagles' Todd McInnis (6-3, 2.71 ERA) on Saturday, while Green Wave hurler Conrad Flynn (4-3, 4.70 ERA) will throw Sunday versus Seth Hester (2-2, 7.20 ERA).
The Golden Eagles are coming off a midweek victory against No. 7 Ole Miss, picking up the 6-4 win at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Southern Miss (27-17, 10-8 C-USA) used a four run fourth inning to take the lead and held off a late Ole Miss surge to win their fourth consecutive game. Jeff Stanley picked up his second win of the season in his second start, scattering nine hits while allowing four runs. Collin Cargill was nearly perfect for the final three innings to pick up his eighth save of the season. He faced the minimum nine hitters though he walked two batters, he also rolled two double play balls. Five different Golden Eagles had a RBI with Kameron Brunty picking up two RBI in the game. Seven different players had at least one hit with Brunty and James Ewing each collecting a pair of hits.
Friday night's opener is set for 6:30PM and will be aired live on WRBH 88.3FM from Pete Taylor Park.
