Baseball Drops Game, Series at UC Riverside on Sunday
Mar 22, 2015 | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Tulane's baseball squad fell behind early and could not dig themselves out of a hole, as the Green Wave lost the rubber match at UC Riverside by a score of 6-2 on Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Tulane (17-7) trailed 3-0 through the first five innings of the game before sophomore Lex Kaplan blasted his second home run of the series to right field. However, it was not enough, as UC Riverside (10-13) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth before piling on two more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
"I just felt like we got beat in all phases of the game most of the weekend," stated Tulane baseball head coach David Pierce. "They outpitched us, outhit us and played better defense, and that's why we didn't win the rubber match."
The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after junior righty Tim Yandel plunked Joe Chavez to put him on base before the speedster came home on an RBI-single by Mark Contreras.
Tulane left two runners on base in both the first and second innings after scattering three hits, but then could not generate many hits the rest of the way against UC Riverside's Keaton Leach. After Yandel (2-1) gave up two two-out runs on another single by Contreras in the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Hunter Williams singled and Kaplan brought him home on his third homer of the season.
Yandel got into some trouble in the seventh by putting two runners on with no outs, and reliever Alex Massey came on to extinguish the flames. After walking the first batter, the Baton Rouge native secured three-straight outs to end the inning.
The Highlanders put the game away in the bottom of the eighth after Cody Sporrer tripled to lead off the inning before he came home on a groundout. Chavez then homered to left field to give UC Riverside their sixth and final run.
Yandel allowed nine hits over 6.0 frames while striking out one. Leach (2-2) hurled a complete game, striking out six and allowing seven hits.
Senior John Gandolfo was the only Tulane hitter with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Sophomore Stephen Alemais and sophomore Jake Willsey notched singles on the afternoon, and freshman Jackson Johnson collected his first-career base hit in the fifth inning.
The Green Wave will host nationally-ranked LSU at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:30pm CT. The game will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH, as well as regionally on Cox Sports Television (CST).
