Aug 6, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Tournament Schedule
NEW ORLEANS – Rising Tulane junior guard Kayla Manuirirangi will be returning home to New Zealand this week to take part in the U23 Nationals competition for her home region of Taranaki.
The U23 Nationals crowns a national champion in New Zealand, pitting the country's best women's basketball players against each other by region. The Taranaki region – on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island – is one of four regions competing in Pool A of the tournament.
"I'm super excited," Manuirirangi said. "I've been working hard this summer, so I'm excited to use what I've practiced. It's an opportunity to play, have fun with old friends and also get exposure."
U23 Nationals, held in Wellington, begin on Tuesday evening in New Zealand. Taranaki tips off at 5:45 p.m. central time that day in its first game and plays another at 11 p.m. central time. Manuirirangi's team will play once more on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. central time to complete pool play.
Based on its results, Taranaki will compete again on Thursday and Friday, with the championship game being played Friday at 7 p.m. central time.
Manuirirangi has previously tried out for New Zealand's national team last summer, and competing in this tournament could get her noticed by the national team once more.
In her sophomore year with Tulane, Manuirirangi was the team's top passer with 107 assists, averaging 3.5 assists per game. She also finished second on the squad with 7.7 points per game and shot 34.2 percent from the 3-point line.
Manuirirangi and the rest of the Green Wave begin their 2018-19 season on November 8 against Texas Southern at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
