NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team (1-0) started the 2016-17 season off on the right foot, surging past Grambling State (0-1) in its season opener, 79-56. Junior Kolby Morgan picked up right where she left off, leading with 21 points on the day she was recognized for her 1,000-career point achievement.
Sophomore Meredith Schulte followed suit with a career best 20 points on an impressive 8-for-9 shooting day. Not to be outdone, senior Leslie Vorpahl broke the Tulane record for most assists in a single-game with 15 this afternoon, besting Ashley Langford's 14 assists she set twice back in 2006 and 2007.
"One of the things we can take out of this game is that Grambling really pushed us, but we were able to take over that game when it got close," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "I also thought our defense did a great job of locking them down."
Morgan got the Wave off to a hot start, scoring eight points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game, as Tulane ultimately shot 62.5 percent in the first quarter (10-of-16), resulting in a 23-12 lead, which later extended into a 33-16 halftime advantage.
Schulte then kept the Tigers at bay in the third quarter connecting on back-to-back treys as she made her first six shots of the game and never missed from beyond the arc, finishing 4-for-4.
Grambling did manage to cut the deficit to 52-45 near the end of the third quarter, but Tulane responded with a 13-0 run over the next three minutes, building a 65-45 lead, which led to the final 79-56 result.
With the victory, Coach Stockton improves to 19-4 in season openers with the Wave, including a perfect 14-0 mark in home openers.
Up next, the Green Wave will travel to Biloxi, Mississippi, for a top-ranked showdown with No. 10 Mississippi State on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. CT, inside the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
