NEW ORLEANS – For the ninth straight year and 17th overall time, the Tulane women's basketball team (8-4) hoisted the Tulane Classic trophy, defeating Auburn (9-4) in a 61-59 thriller Thursday evening inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane Classic MVP Kolby Morgan paved the way with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a 4-for-6 mark from three-point range, followed by All-Tournament selection Leslie Vorpahl and her 10-point, six assist performance.
"I'm very proud of this team," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "Thought we beat a very good Auburn team. We really set the tone for us in the first half. Going into the locker-room with just four turnovers against them was an amazing stat for us because Auburn is such a great defensive team. Our squad was really focused tonight and glad we finished strong."
It was nothing but three-pointers for both sides in the first quarter as Tulane held an 11-9 lead after starting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc compared to Auburn's 3-for-3. Tene Thompson recorded the first two-pointer of the game at the 1:16 mark, giving the Wave a 13-9 advantage after the opening period.
The Olive and Blue extended its lead to 19-13 before the Tigers produced a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead. However, the Wave revved up the pressure, forcing three Auburn shot-clock violations in the final 3:30 of the half, which resulted in seven immediate points and capped by an 11-0 run, as Tulane took a 30-20 lead into half.
Tulane garnered its largest lead of the game, up 40-26, after an 8-0 run at the 5:29 mark in the third, but Auburn responded with a 14-2 run, before an old-fashioned three-point play from Thompson gave the Wave a 45-40 lead heading into the final quarter.
Later, Auburn threatened by cutting the deficit to 52-51 with 4:08 remaining, but Meredith Schulte and Vorpahl each responded with big three-pointers in the final minutes, setting up the Wave defense to clinch by the final score of 61-59.
Not only did the Green Wave capture its third straight win, but also its 10th straight at home. The last time Tulane had won 10 straight inside Fogelman in Devlin dates back to Jan. of 2003.
Up next, after a short holiday break, the Wave will converge back upon New Orleans where they'll host Maine on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. CT.
