NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball team (9-4) powered through a sluggish start before collecting its fourth straight win via a 77-62 victory over Maine (7-7) in their final non-conference game of the season. Senior Leslie Vorpahl recorded a day to remember, surpassing 1,000 career points this afternoon thanks to her season high 24-point performance on 7-of-8 shooting. Vorpahl also collected her first double-double of the season after dishing out 11 assists.
Not to be outdone, junior Kolby Morgan finished with a game high 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. In addition, sophomore Harlyn Wyatt scored 10 points in the second half to finish with 12 points, reaching double-figures for the second time in the last three games.
"It was a really hard fought game in which our defense made the difference in the second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "We started the game really flat and gave them so many opportunities. We came back and defended the three much better, applied better pressure and created some turnovers and it really got our momentum going in the second half."
Maine jumped out to a 13-3 lead to start the game before Tulane kept pace by connecting on 5-of-6 from three to trail just 22-18 after the opening period. The Black Bears, who averaged 6.1 made three-pointers per game, connected on 8-of-16 in the first half alone, extending their lead to 34-25.
Yet, the Wave continued to battle back, ending the half on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to one possession at 34-31. Both Morgan and Vorpahl had 12 points each at the midway mark.
Trailing just 38-37 in the opening minutes of the third, the Wave produced an 18-5 run, ultimately outscoring Maine 24-12 in the quarter to open up a 55-46 lead.
The Black Bears then opened the fourth with back-to-back three's, cutting the deficit to 57-52, but the Olive and Blue responded with a 10-1 run to garner their largest lead of the game at 67-53, before cruising to the final of 77-62.
Lastly, Tulane improved to 7-0 at home this season and have now won 11 straight inside Fogelman in Devlin dating back to last season.
Up next, the Green Wave will kick-off American Athletic Conference play on the road with a New Year's Eve battle at East Carolina at 1:30 p.m. CT.
