NASHVILLE – Up 33-26 at the half and 45-44 to begin the fourth quarter, the Tulane (5-3) women's basketball team couldn't hang on as Vanderbilt (8-1) rallied to take it 74-63 inside Memorial Gym on Monday night. Two days after being held scoreless for the first time of her career, junior Kolby Morgan recorded a career high 34 points on 14-of-26 shooting from the field, with a 5-for-9 mark from three-point range.
"Obviously, this was a disappointing loss," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We really battled in the first half. We have been challenging our team defensively and rebounding wise to step up and do a better job. I thought we did that in the first half but just let our guard down a little bit and then just couldn't make shots."
Tulane jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the opening six minutes, sinking seven of its first 12 shots, before claiming a 20-12 lead at the end of the first period. Morgan connected on eight of her first 11 shots, including three of her first four beyond the arc, tallying 19 points by half.
Combine Morgan's hot shooting with a 25-18 rebounding advantage after 20 minutes and the Green Wave were ahead 33-26 at the midway point.
Next, Vanderbilt began to chip away, shooting 57.1 percent in the third quarter and later 58.8 percent in the fourth, compared to the Wave's 33.3 percent shooting mark in the second half. As a result, Vanderbilt claimed their first lead since the 6:41 mark in the first period with 9:39 left in the game, at 47-45.
Furthermore, the Commodores, who entered tonight ranked 12th in the country in three-point percentage (.419) and averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game, connected on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the final quarter, building a lead as large as 13 points at 69-56, with 2:41 left. The deficit proved too much with the little time remaining, as Tulane dropped its second straight by the final of 74-63.
Up next, the Green Wave will conclude its three-game road swing with a trip to Baton Rouge to take on in-state rival LSU on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. CT, on SEC Network+.
