Football Puts Final Touches on Readiness for Saturday Home Opener

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane football team put the final touches on its week-long preparation for Southen with a nearly two-hour practice at Yulman Stadium on Thursday.
"We were trying to be assignment sound (today) and not wear guys out," said head coach Willie Fritz. "We're two days away from the ballgame so a lot of it is mental. But we got a lot good work on that and getting bodies on bodies. You get a chance at end of this practice to really evaluate and see who knows what they are doing. You're still able to see if there are any type of mistakes and things you need to clean up."
The Green Wave (0-1, 0-0 American Athletic Conference | West) look to get into the first column for the first time this season and give Fritz his first win leading the Olive and Blue. A win on Saturday would be the first victory for Tulane since a 34-31 triumph at Army on Nov. 14, 2015. Saturday's kickoff against the Jaguars (0-1, 0-0 SWAC West) is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.Â
Fritz noted that his squad has some simple keys to come out on top in front of a capacity crowd at Yulman, saying "Defensively, we have to keep doing what we did last week -- stay over the top, not allow any easy scores and tackle well. Then we have to do a great job offensively and being assignment sound. Special teams-wise, we have to do a great job with their returns."
The matchup with Southern is the first of three games at home for the Green Wave this month with Navy coming to town on Saturday, Sept. 17 (6 p.m., American Sports Network/ESPN3) and UL-Lafayette visiting on Saturday, Sept. 24 (6 or 7 p.m., Broadcast TBA).
