CINCINATTI– Down five points with just 29 seconds left in the game, the (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (14-7, 5-3) stormed back to force overtime before surging ahead to escape Cincinnati (14-7, 5-3) with the 74-68 victory. Junior Kolby Morgan shone bright, recording her first double-double on the year with a career high 35 points on 14-of-25 shooting, along with a career best 12 rebounds.
"There were a lot of things I could negatively say about our performance but the fact that our team got it together when we were down and found a way to win speaks volumes," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "Down five with less than 30 seconds to go, tied it, then won in overtime, just really proud of the effort."
Morgan made her first 4-of-5 from the field and had Tulane up 12-10 at the first media timeout before finishing with all of the Wave's 12 points to end the first quarter down three to the Bearcats.
Leslie Vorpahl then made the first non-Morgan basket at 8:45 in the second quarter, but the Wave offense continued its cold spell, only connecting on four field goals after the seven-minute mark to head into the locker-room down 30-24.
In the third, Cincinnati and Tulane traded 8-2 runs before the Bearcats garnered their largest lead of the game, up 46-34 at 3:08. Yet, the Wave responded in a major way, ending the last 1:50 of the quarter on an 11-0 run to tie it at 48-all.
Morgan then scored 10 of the Wave's 13 fourth quarter points, including a three-pointer when Tulane needed it most, down five (61-56) with 24 seconds left, cutting the deficit to two points. Morgan then earned a pivotal steal with 11 seconds left before Harding knocked down the game-tying lay-up.
In overtime, Morgan's career high 35th point handed the Olive and Blue a 70-66 lead with 57 seconds remaining. Next, Vorpahl and Latham stepped up on the free-throw line, as each went 2-for-2 respectively in the final 30 seconds of the game, to clinch the come from behind 74-68 victory.
Up next, the Green Wave conclude the January road gauntlet by traveling to Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 31, for a 7 p.m. CT tip.
