Personal Records Highlight Track & Field's Indoor Season Openers

NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane track & field opened its 2017-18 indoor season with a bang this weekend. The women's team, led by junior Rebekah Markel, set numerous personal records Friday at the BSC Panther Icebreaker in Birmingham, Ala., while junior Emmanuel Rotich and redshirt junior Lauren Bartels both etched their names into the Tulane record book Saturday at the Boston University Season Opener in Boston.
BSC Panther Icebreaker
Markel shined in the pole vault finals and delivered the performance of the meet, finishing first with a mark of 4.00m to set a new personal best and earn the fourth-best mark in Tulane indoor history. Freshman Kristina Leggas came in right behind Markel, tallying a vault of 3.70m to earn a second-place finish and set a personal best in her collegiate debut.
Junior Jessica Duckett finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59. Duckett, who holds the school indoor record in the 60m hurdles (8.44), also finished fifth in the 400m dash with a time of 57.10. Duckett's time in the 400m dash is a personal best as she surpassed her previous time of 57.58, which was set in Dec. 2016.
Sophomore Brandi Hughes finished fifth (8.67) and 10th (58.76) in the 60m hurdles and 400m dash, respectively. Freshman Kyah Loyd, making her collegiate debut, picked up times of 8.67 in the 60m dash and 25.53 in the 200m dash - both personal bests. Sophomore Maya Harewood's time of 24.80 (fourth-place finish) in the 200m dash was a personal best and is tenth-best in Tulane indoor history.
Boston University Season Opener
Rotich, on the heels of a historic cross country season, finished second in the men 5000m run, setting his personal record in the process with a time of 13:52.15. The time eclipses his previous best of 14:04.80, which was set outdoors at the Penn Relays (4/27/17).
Bartels earned a 25th place finish (17:13.76) in women 5000m run. Bartels' time is a personal best, as well as good for sixth place in Tulane indoor history.

Tulane will not compete again until after the New Year when it heads to LSU's Purple Tiger Invitational Jan. 5 in Baton Rouge, La.
