Indoor Track & Field Wraps Day One in New York City
Feb 3, 2017 | Women's Track and Field, Track & Field
NEW YORK – Day one of competition at The Armory Track Invitational in New York City ended on a high note for the women of Tulane's indoor track & field squad, as the Green Wave closed out the first half of the meet with five top-ten finishes and a pair of personal bests inside the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory. In similar fashion to last year's trip to The Big Apple, Tulane runners stole the show by posting impressive results on the track.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY ONE
Freshman Maya Harewood opened competition at The Armory for the Green Wave with a personal best in the 400 meter dash (57.25), followed shortly by a quick performance of 8.68 seconds from sophomore Jessica Duckett in the 60m hurdles prelims. With her prelims performance, Duckett tied her season-best for a time good enough to qualify for the semifinals of the event, falling just short of a finals berth but running another season best to finish in 8.55.
Junior Emma Newton would post Tulane's second career best of the day, running her first 5,000 meter race of the year in 17:19.81 for a fifth-place finish. The Green Wave wrapped up day one with the team's first distance medley relay of the season, where Sarah Cella, Jessica Adamson, Jessica Duckett and Mikayla Sonneborn pulled off a fourth-place finish, Tulane's highest of the day, in a time of 11:48.98.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave will close out competition at The Armory on Saturday, with the team's second relay of the weekend, a handful of additional running events and four Tulane women competing in the pole vault. Following the weekend stay in New York, the Green Wave travel to Birmingham for the third and final time in the regular season to compete at the Samford Invitational on Friday, Feb. 10.
