BATON ROUGE – Tulane had three pole vaulters clear bars of four meters or higher and redshirt senior Daliadiz Ortiz continued her record-setting ways in the javelin as the Green Wave completed a full day of competition at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge. The Saturday meet saw eight podium finishes and seven personal bests on the Bernie Moore Track as Tulane inched one week closer to the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships next month.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LSU ALUMNI GOLD
The Green Wave saw a handful of exceptional performances in the field in Saturday's meet, with Ortiz setting her fourth javelin record of the season and her second and as many weeks, coming away with her fifth consecutive finish of third place or higher on a throw of 52.56m.
Tulane also posted top marks in the pole vault, and for the second time this year had three jumpers clear bars of at least four meters. Alyssa Applebee claimed her fourth event title of the season in Baton Rouge, posting a mark of 4.13m alongside Mary Carson Pitts, who set a career best on her third-place finish. Rebekah Markel jumped over four meters for just the second time in her Tulane career, tying her personal best of 4.02m.
Tulane started out the day on the track, with Mikayla Sonneborn taking second in the women's 3,000m steeplechase in the first event of the day. Her time of 11:06.30 was her second fastest of the season, second only to the personal best she set at the Victor Lopez Invitational last month, and Sonneborn now holds three of Tulane's top four steeplechase marks on the year.
Freshman sprinter Maya Harewood also came away with a podium finish on the day, setting a personal best 55.27 that was good for third place in the B-section of the event. Also in the sprints, Tulane's top hurdler, Jessica Duckett, maintained her speedy times in both the 100m and 400m hurdles, posting respective times of 13.52 and 59.48 in each event.
On the men's side, freshman Raymond Kibet, fresh off of a performance that broke a 50 year-old Tulane record, ran another sub-46 second time, finishing in just 45.78 for fourth place in the 400m invitational.
Moses Aloiloi wrapped up Tulane's individual efforts on the day with a second-place finish in the men's 5,000m race.
UP NEXT
Tulane will go split squad next weekend, as the Green Wave take on both the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
