Football Holds First Practice of Preseason
Jul 31, 2017 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Yulman Stadium was alive with action under the warm morning sun on Monday, as the Tulane football team hit the field for the first practice of 2017 preseason camp.
Â
The Green Wave donned helmets and shorts for their initial workout of 2017, beginning their second season under head coach Willie Fritz. The Wave went through positional drills, followed by a 7-on-7 session and offensive/defensive unit work, before ending the practice with a team drill.
Â
The emphasis put forth by the Fritz and his staff from the outset is on finishing. The coaches are stressing the importance of completing every repetition in the weight room, every meeting and every practice.
Â
"One of the things we have to do a great job with is finishing in the fourth quarter," Fritz said. "We had four ballgames last year that were decided in the fourth quarter. We have to finish those games and win those ballgames. We really want to accent finishing in everything we're doing, whether it's a meeting or practice, an athletic training session, or strength and conditioning, it's very, very important."
Â
One way in which the team is stressing the importance of finishing and conditioning is to run six repetitions before substituting players, rather than the sets of three or four reps that had been used in the past.
Â
"It's always tough to go from conditioning to a real two-hour, 15-minute practice," Fritz said. "Football conditioning is totally different that running sprints, especially when you have the helmet on. We'll get better."
Â
Â
The Green Wave will be back on the turf in Yulman Stadium Tuesday for the second day of workouts. Practices are closed to the public.
Â
