BATON ROUGE, La. – Tulane women's cross country delivered a brilliant performance Saturday morning at the LSU Invitational, claiming four of the top five finishes in the 5k run. Seniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels finished first and second, respectively, while freshman Bridgid Selfors took the fourth spot and redshirt sophomore Mckenzie Melius grabbed fifth.
"Our team took an important step forward today," associate head cross country coach Michael Nussa said. "They ran as a team through the first half of the race and were in a great position to put the race away over the second half. The gap between our first and fifth runners is closer than it has ever been, which will be important as we get into larger meets in the second half of the season."
Newton and Bartels' performances are a near repeat of last season's runs at the LSU Invitational, when the women's team notched a second-place team finish on first-second placings from Newton and Bartels. Newton notched a time of 17:54.29 to land herself at the top of the podium last year.
"Emma executed a great race today to repeat as champion of this meet," Nussa said. "Emma and Lauren broke away from the rest of the field at about 3k, and Emma did a great job keeping pressure on all the way to the finish line."
Sophomore Sarah Cella earned a 10th place finish, while senior Jennifer LaMori and sophomore Mary-Catherine Stovall followed behind her at 14th and 15th, respectively. Freshman Rachel Maue finished in 19th place.
On the men's side, senior Moses Aloiloi followed his first-place winning performance last Saturday at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Festival with a fourth-place finish, leading Tulane to a fourth-place team finish. Junior Joshua Cheruyot grabbed the 12th spot, sophomore Carlos Zervigon finished 18th and junior Pierce Hill finished 30th.
Up Next
Tulane has a week off before traveling to South Bend, Ind. for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, where junior Emmanuel Rotich will return to competition. Rotich was held out of the previous two meets to rest.
