HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Jessica Duckett and sophomore Brandi Hughes dazzled in their events. Duckett and Hughes finished second - 13.51 (-0.5) - and third - 13.75 (-0.5) - in the 100m hurdles, respectively, before they took the top two spots in the 400m hurdles.
Duckett placed first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.82 while Hughes took second with a personal-best time of 1:00.40.
"Jessica and Brandi were terrific today, finishing second and third in the 100m hurdles and coming back to finish one, two in the 400m hurdles," Peterson said. "We're encouraged by the way they competed today."
Sophomore Maya Harewood won the women's 400m race with a time of 54.79, defeating the second-place finisher by .13 seconds. Harewood's personal record in the event is 54.43, which she set last May.
"Maya won the 400m with probably the second-best time of her life," Peterson said. "It's a really, really good jump forward for her coming out of the indoor season."
Elsewhere on the track, freshman Danielle Wember set a new personal record in the 200m, finishing fifth in her heat with a time of 25.76. Wember also posted a distance of 5.74m in the long jump, earning an eighth-place finish in her heat and setting another new personal record.
On the men's side, sophomore Raymond Kibet recorded a time of 21.90 in the men's 200m race, earning a fifth-place finish in his heat and a ninth-place finish overall. Kibet is gearing up to run his primary event - the 400m race - next weekend in California.
"Raymond's showing consistency at that distance, and now we're going to get him in his primary event next weekend in Los Angeles," Peterson said. "He'll be in the 400m, and I think his season will really begin when he gets that chance to run the higher-level competition in his primary event."
Markel set a new outdoor personal record in the pole vault after winning the event with a mark of 4.05m. Her previous outdoor best was 4.04m, which she set last May.
On the men's side in the throwing events, sophomore Ryan Singer finished ninth with a distance of 47.24m. The mark tops his previous career-best by nearly four meters, as his old top mark was 43.66m (5/14/17).
