Â
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball held a 2-1 lead through five innings, but fell in the opening game of its series against San Diego, 11-4, Thursday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (3-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the third on RBI by Hunter Williams and Jarret DeHart to take a 2-1 lead, but the Toreros (7-3) scored 10 runs in the sixth through eighth innings to move ahead, 11-2. Grant Brown hit a two-run double in the seventh to give the Wave its third and fourth runs.
Â
Tulane freshman Chase Solesky was solid in six complete innings in his longest of three starts this season, scattering six hits and allowing two runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
"Chase just did what he's done all year long," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "When we have given him the ball, he has given us a chance to win. The game is right in flux when he comes out. It's been like that every time, and we got that again tonight. Unfortunately, it's not a five- or six-inning game, it's a nine-inning game."
Â
The Green Wave took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman catcher Paul Gozzo was hit by a pitch, went to third on Lex Kaplan's hit-and-run single through the right side, and scored on Williams' groundout to third base. DeHart followed with a laser to right center that one-hopped over the wall for a double, scoring Kaplan. San Diego had taken a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second.
Â
The Toreros tied the game, 2-2, with a two-out RBI double in the top of the sixth. USD then plated five runs in the seventh inning and four runs in the eighth, on four hits, five walks, a hit batter, three wild pitches and a passed ball against five Tulane relievers. Â
Â
Trailing 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Kaplan and DeHart drew walks, and Brown lined a double into the right center field gap, plating both runners to make it a 9-4 game.
Â
Christian Colletti (0-1) allowed three runs in the sixth, and absorbed the loss. San Diego reliever Miles Sandum (1-1) earned the win with 3.1 innings in relief of starter Louis Crow. Right fielder Hunter Mercado-Hood went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs for the Toreros.
Â
The four-game series between Tulane and San Diego continues Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE. Live video and live stats will be available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com, and the game will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH and the TuneIn Radio app.
