NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball seniors Hunter Williams and Christian Colletti were named the American Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after leading the Green Wave to a 4-0 record last week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Hunter Williams drove in six runs, scored four runs, and hit .333 with a .722 slugging percentage, while Colletti allowed no runs over 7.0 innings across three relief appearances and earned a save, leading the Green Wave to a three-game sweep of No. 25 UConn and a midweek win over Nicholls State.
Â
Williams, a first baseman from West Monroe, La., tallied three extra base hits, including two home runs, and tallied two RBI in three of the four games. His mammoth home run to left center on Sunday tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, allowing the Green Wave to win in extra innings. He drove in two runs in the series opener on Friday, hitting a two-run single to give Tulane the lead for good in the third inning. He also homered and doubled in Tuesday's win over Nicholls State.
Â
Colletti, a lefthander from Rockville Centre, N.Y., picked up his fourth save of the season with two shutout innings against UConn in Friday's 3-1 win. He allowed just one baserunner to reach first base in that outing, and retired the final five batters of the game. Saturday, he entered in the ninth with Tulane trailing, 5-3, and sat down the Huskies in order, then stayed in for two more frames, allowing no runs and enabling the Green Wave to win the game in the 12th inning. Tuesday against Nicholls State, he threw the final two innings of Tulane's 9-3 victory.
Â
This is the first career conference weekly award for both Williams and Colletti, and Tulane's first conference player or pitcher of the week award this season. Williams has been listed on the weekly Honor Roll once this season (March 20), and three times in his career.
Â
The Green Wave (18-18, 7-2 American) plays host to Louisiana-Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
