NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball dropped a 9-5 decision at UNO Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.

The Green Wave (12-17) scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Privateers (17-13) came back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. UNO added two more runs in the fifth, and the Wave cut it to 9-5 with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh innings.

Hunter Williams hit two doubles and scored twice, Jarret DeHart drove in two runs on two hits, and Lex Kaplan homered to lead Tulane.

Freshman Burton Schnake (0-1) pitched three scoreless innings in his first career start, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Ted Andrews, the fifth pitcher used by Tulane in the game, entered in the fifth with the bases loaded a no outs, and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, recording five strikeouts. Matthew Gillis (2-1) pitched 1.2 innings in relief and earned the win.

"We hit some balls pretty good early, and didn't have anything to show for it," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "Ted Andrews hasn't pitched much, and he threw up some zeroes to give us a chance. We scored some runs late, and the players kept coming, but we were just chasing too many runs."

Kaplan put Tulane on the board with a solo home run to right field to lead off the fourth inning. It was his fifth homer of the season. Hunter Williams followed with a double, and scored on a base hit by Sal Gozzo to give the Wave a 2-0 lead.

UNO took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs on seven hits. The Privateers scored runs on a sacrifice fly, RBI single, three-run home run and a two-run single to move ahead, 7-2. An RBI walk and base hit added two runs in the fifth, giving UNO a 9-2 lead.

The Green Wave cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth when Williams led off the frame with his second double of the night, and scored on Jarret DeHart's base hit through the left side. In the seventh, Paul Gozzo, who entered the game in the sixth inning, led off with a base hit up the middle, and Grant Witherspoon was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Gozzo scored on Williams' RBI groundout, and DeHart drove in his second run of the game, singling home Witherspoon to make the score 9-5.

Tulane travels to Cincinnati for a three-game American Athletic Conference series this weekend. Game times are 5 p.m. CT Friday, 3 p.m. CT Saturday and noon CT Sunday. The games will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH and the TuneIn Radio app, and live stats will be available on www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
