Men's Golf Finishes 10th At 1999 Deep South Intercollegiate

ABITA SPRINGS, La. - Bolstered by the play of individual champion Jacques Chevallier, the Southeastern Louisiana men's golf team captured the team title Tuesday at the 1999 Deep South Intercollegiate at Money Hill Country Club.
Chevallier, who won individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 210 (-6), led the Lions to a dominating victory. SLU posted a team total of 853 (-11) to win the 18-team event by 11 strokes over runner-up Marquette (864). Memphis finished third at 869, while Texas Tech finihsed fourth at 873.
Two other SLU players earned top-20 finishes as the team won this event for the second consecutive year.
Chevallier won the event by one stroke over Oral Roberts' Charleton Dechert and Texas-Arlington's Corby King. His two-under-par finishing score was one of only four sub-par rounds among the top 20 finishers.
Leading the way for Tulane was senior Ben Zeiky, who finished in a tie for 18th place with a three-round total of 219. Included in the effort was a second-round 71, his lowest round of the year.
Zeiky helped the Green Wave to a 10th-place team finish, the squad's third straight top-10 effort. Tulane shot a final round 303 to finish with a total of 884.
Other Tulane finishers included Justin Strausbaugh (T39th/223), Byron Shultz (T39th/223), Gareth White (T47th/224), Bryon McDougall (T51st/225), James Griffin (T59th/227), Louis DeValeix (T68th/229), Rodrigo Sol (T79th/234), Phil Krass (T81st/235) and Mike Rodrigue (88th/246).
The tournament was the final fall event for the Green Wave. The team will next be in action Feb. 6-8 at The Bridges All-American Intercollegiate in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
