NEW ORLEANS - Louisville's Chris Redman had all the yards. Tulane's Shaun King, however, got the points and that made the difference.
King, playing his second game with a broken left wrist, threw three touchdown passes Saturday and No. 24 Tulane withstood a late rally to beat Louisville 28-22 and continue its best start in 24 years.
This victory by the Green Wave (5-0 overall, 3-0 Conference USA) matched the 5-0 start of the 1974 team that finished 5-6.
King, who is right-handed, was 16-of-29 for 273 yards without an interception. He threw scoring passes of 29 yards to JaJuan Dawson, 26 yards to Jamaican Dartez and 13 yards to O'Kie Woods. King's 48 career touchdown passes broke Terrence Jones' school record of 46.
"Shaun started out kind of slow, then he picked it up," Tulane coach Tommy Bowden said. "He was closer to his old self this week. Hopefully, he'll continue to get better each week."
Dartez rushed for 114 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries and Dawson caught nine passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.
Louisville (3-4, 1-2) was always in it thanks to the passing of Redman, who was 41-of-56 for 477 of the Cardinals' 560 yards.
"We matched up real well against their defense," said Redman, who needed stitches at halftime to close a cut under his chin. "Unfortunately, we came up just short. Time ran out on us."
Redman drove the Cardinals to a first-and-goal at the Tulane 3 in the final seconds. He spiked the ball to stop the clock on first down, then threw the ball away with three seconds left when he couldn't find an open receiver.
On the final play of the game, his pass into the end zone was wide of Lavell Boyd and Tulane cornerback Tim Carter smothered the ball.
"I thought that was two teams just playing hard all the way," Bowden said. "They didn't quit and played hard to the end, and we didn't quit and played hard to the end."
Redman, who threw for one touchdown and had one intercepted, completed 17 consecutive passes during the first half.
Redman's output made him Louisville's career leader in completions (602) and passing yards (7,318).
Boyd caught 10 passes for 146 yards and Arnold Jackson caught 12 for 132 and a touchdown. LeRoy Collins rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
