Kogan Wins First Two Matches at ITA's

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) of Tulane University won a pair of matches to advance to the round of 16 of the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga.
Kogan, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, opened the event with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 victory over No. 100 Sam Warburg of Stanford. In second round action, the Green Wave All-American defeated Brian Wilson from Illinois, 7-5, 6-3. Wilson had defeated No. 94 Chris Gostek of Alabama, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round.
The Green Wave sophomore returns to action Friday morning at 9 a.m. meeting the top seed in the tournament, Duke's Philip King. King is ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Tulane junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 51 in the nation, was upended by UT-Arlington's Andy Leber, the preseason No. 70 player, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the tourney. However, Romero rebounded for a 7-6, 6-4 consolation bracket victory over South Carolina's Seth Rose. Rose lost to Pepperdine's Al Garland, the No. 4 player in the nation, in three sets in the main draw. Romero will continue action Friday as well, meeting No. 56 Danny Westerman from Wisconsin.
In doubles action, Kogan and Romero met West Nott and Scott Schnugg from Georgia Tech. The Green Wave duo, ranked No. 19 in the preseason, rolled to an 8-4 victory and will continue play Friday.
With 360 players competing in the singles draws, the ITA Men's All-American Championship is the largest collegiate tennis tournament in the country.
