STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) of Tulane University defeated Duke's Philip King, the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, 6-1, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals of the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga.
"Michael was down five set points in the tiebreaker, but he staved them off to win the breaker, 10-8," Tulane head coach Robert Klein. "He served well, extremely well at times. In the first set, he played flawless tennis."
King was the top seed in the tournament, while Kogan is the No. 9 seed.
Kogan will play in the quarterfinals Saturday against Auburn's Tiago Ruffoni beginning at 9 a.m.
Tulane junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 51 in the nation, was ousted from the consolation bracket by No. 56 Danny Westerman from Wisconsin, 7-6, 6-0. After Romero re-aggravated an injury in his match, Klein opted to withdraw his team of Romero and Kogan from the doubles draw.
With 360 players competing in the singles draws, the ITA Men's All-American Championship is the largest collegiate tennis tournament in the country. This tournament (and the Riviera Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., this week) are the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this 2001-02 season. The All-American, the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events (for singles and doubles) during the season for Division I men and women.
Further results from the ITA All-American Championship will be posted at TulaneGreenWave.com as well as at www.itatennis.com.
