Green Wave Completes Domination of Tennis Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University completed a tremendous weekend at the its own 2001 Men's Tennis Invitational Sunday, winning both the "A' Flight Singles and "A" Flight Doubles titles. The Wave had taken the "B' Flight Doubles title on Saturday.
In Sunday's doubles action, Tulane's top tandem of sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 19 in the country, had a tough task with a talented pair from LSU on the opposing court. The Tiger duo of Sebastian Rutka and Daniel Kiernan hold the No. 5 doubles ranking in the nation, but they were no match for Tulane's team on its home court. Kogan and Romero picked up a pair of break points and rolled to an 8-4 victory for the "A" Flight championship.
Earlier in the day, Romero and Kogan had a showdown between themselves for the "A" Flight Singles title. Both had advanced from the earlier round with three convincing wins, neither losing a set. Kogan, ranked No. 15 in the country, was the top seed in the tourney and had the easier route. Meanwhile, Romero was forced to upend a pair of nationally-ranked players from LSU, No. 98 Jason Pieters and No. 29 Daniel Kiernan, in order to face his higher-rated teammate. Despite the rankings, Romero prevailed, 6-3, 6-3.
"Romero has shown a lot," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said. "He didn't get a lot of respect last year in the rankings. He finished 19-3 and only had the No. 98 ranking. But he has really raised his level of play and I am sure he will get a lot more respect after this weekend.
"I am thrilled to death that we have two of the best players in the country right here at Tulane," Klein continued, in reference to Romero and Kogan.
The Green Wave had captured the "B" Flight Doubles title Saturday afternoon, as junior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) and sophomore Goran Vasiljevic (Varmo, Switzerland) teamed up to defeat Southern Miss' David Jansson and Uwe Gneiting, 8-4.
"We have had this tournament for eight years," Klein said. "And this is our best performance as a team bar none. I couldn't be more pleased.
LSU's Bryan Fisher won the "B" Flight Singles Championship with a hard-fought three-set triumph over UNO's Michael Chkroun, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The "A" Singles Consolation title was taken by LSU's Jason Hazely, who earned a default victory. The "B" Singles Consolation championship was earned by UNO's Abedin Sham, who topped Privateer teammate Julien de la Meitre, 6-2, 7-6.
