Westerberg Posts Upset Victory at Southern Collegiates

ATHENS, Ga. - Tulane University junior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) upset South Carolina's Rodrigo Pacheco in first day action of the Southern Collegiate Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex Friday.
Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel), the No. 1 seed in the first division of the tournament, also picked up a victory. He defeated Vanderbilt's Chad Harris, 6-0, 6-2. Kogan, ranked No. 15 in the nation in the ITA Preseason Rankings, will play Saturday against the winner of Friday's match between Mississippi State's David Ruiz and Georgia's Nicolas Boeker.
Westerberg, playing in the second division of the singles draw, upended Pacheco, the No. 8 seed in the division, 7-6, 6-1. He advances to play Vanderbilt's Rach Dailey Saturday.
Freshman Brad Cinalli (Avondale, Pa.), making his collegiate debut, was topped by Michael LaHaie from Memphis, 6-0, 6-1, in third division singles.
In doubles action, Westerberg and Cinalli lost in the first round of the B Division, 8-3, to Virginia Tech's Stephane Rod and Grant Semon.
