ATHEN, Ga. - Tulane University's Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) was defeated in the championship match of the 34th Annual Southern Collegiate Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The event featured over 200 student-athletes representing 43 schools throughout the southeast.
Playing his second match of the day, Kogan battled Mississippi State's Romain Ambert for three sets before falling, 6-7, 7-5, 1-6.
The Green Wave All-American, ranked No. 15 in the ITA Preseason rankings, was not surprised by his strong showing.
"I was the first seed and I wanted to win the whole thing," Kogan said. "I played so many matches and the second round was pretty tiring. This was my second match of the day, Wagner [semifinal opponent] was pretty good, we went for around two hours. I thought I could win, but I think he [Ambert] was more fit than I was."
Ambert is ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings.
In his first match of the day, Kogan defeated Georgia's Brandon Wagner, 6-4, 6-3. Wagner is ranked No. 37 in the nation. It was Kogan's second victory of the weekend over a player from host Georgia, the defending NCAA Champion.
Kogan had five wins on the weekend, dropping only one set before the championship match.
