NEW ORLEANS, La. - Games against seven teams the made the postseason, another game in the Louisiana Superdome, the Conference USA Tournament at Turchin Stadium and a trip to California to participate in the heralded KIA Baseball Bash highlight the 2003 Tulane University baseball schedule, head coach Rick Jones announced Monday.
The Green Wave's 56-game regular-season slate features 31 contests to be played at Turchin - the on-campus home of Tulane baseball - as well as three-game series with arch-rival LSU and cross-town foe UNO. Among the 22 Tulane opponents in 2003, Cal State Fullerton, Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Houston, Louisville and East Carolina qualified for the postseason a year ago, while the Longhorns won the national championship. LSU, Houston, ECU have advanced to the Super Regionals within the past two years, as has 2003 foe Pepperdine.
"Games against six teams that went to the Super Regionals in the past two years will definitely challenge this team," Jones said. "(The schedule) is one that if we are successful, it will certainly help our postseason chances. Couple that with the fact that Conference USA has become one of the top five conferences in the country, and we're going to be challenged on a daily basis."
Tulane and LSU will play games at Zephyr Field on March 11, in Baton Rouge on April 15, and a matchup in the Superdome on April 29. The two teams set the NCAA single-game attendance mark in the facility a year ago when 27,673 fans were on hand to support their respective teams. The Green Wave and the Privateers, meanwhile, will return to their respective campus facilities for the first time since 1998 with a game at Turchin Stadium on April 1, a contest at Privateer Park at April 8, and a May 13 matchup at Zephyr Field.
In addition to the regular season, Tulane will also play host to the 2003 Conference USA Tournament from May 21-25 with the tournament winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. It marks the fifth time Tulane has hosted a conference tournament -1992 Metro Tournament and the 1997, 1998 and 2001 C-USA Tourneys - and the second time C-USA's premier event is played at Turchin Stadium as the 1997 championship was played on campus.
In 2003, the Green Wave will play three-game home series vs. St. Joseph's, George Mason, Pepperdine and Manhattan, as well as league foes Memphis, Houston, UAB, Cincinnati and East Carolina. On the road, the Green Wave will play weekend series vs. Conference USA opponents TCU, Southern Miss, Charlotte, Saint Louis and Louisville.
At the KIA Baseball Bash from Feb. 28 through March 2, the Green Wave will take on Cal State Fullerton on Friday and UCLA on Saturday before closing out the tournament against Texas on Sunday.
Tulane will also play home-and-home midweek games against Louisiana-Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana, and will play Nicholls State at Turchin Stadium.
