NEW ORLEANS - Bill Gutknecht, a senior at The Woodlands High School in The Woodlands, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent in men's golf at Tulane University, Green Wave Head Coach Tom Shaw announced Monday. Gutknecht is Shaw's first signee of the November signing period.
Gutknecht will bring impressive results on the American Junior Golf Association circuit to Tulane beginning in 2003-04. He has five top 20 finishes in AJGA events this year and twice placed in the Top Five. At the AJGA Chyrsler Classic in Greensboro, N.C., Gutknecht tied for 13th at a tournament considered one of the AJGA's "majors".
Gutknecht, a two-time Rotary Club Student of the Year at The Woodlands HS, helped his high school team to the Texas Class 5A state championship as a junior as he finished sixth individually in the event. He is a member of the National Honor Society.
"Bill is a proven winner and model student," Shaw said. "He is bringing his success at the national tournament level to Tulane and will make a great impact in his first year. Bill's accomplishments in the classroom and his community service involvement make him exactly what Tulane is looking for in its students. I look forward to watching Bill help us win many tournaments in the future."
Gutknecht is the third Texan signed by Shaw in the last two years. He will join current sophomores Chris Wheeler (Allen, Texas) and Mark Sullivan (Plano, Texas) on the Green Wave roster next year.
Tulane returns to action for 2002-03 on Feb. 10-11, 2003 when they host the Tulane Invitational at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.
