NEW ORLEANS - Michael Thompson, the number two ranked player in Arizona and one of the Top 20 junior players in the country, has signed a national letter of intent to play golf at Tulane University, Green Wave Head Coach Tom Shaw announced Wednesday.
Thompson was named Player of the year by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona and earned Golfer of the Year honors from the Arizona Daily Star newspaper. A senior at University High School in Tucson, he posted five Top 15 finishes in AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) events this year, including a tie for 11th at the prestigious Westfield Junior PGA Championship. He also had one top five placing.
As a junior, Thompson led his team to the Arizona Class 4A state championship with a sixth-place individual finish. He ranks behind only United States junior champion Charlie Beljan among junior golfers in Arizona.
"We have taken a giant step toward becoming one of the elite college golf programs with the signing of Michael Thompson," Shaw said. "He is one of the top players in the country and will help us out immediately. Not only is he a great player but he is an honors student and an outstanding young man. Tulane is lucky to have a student-athlete of this quality."
Thompson joins Texas' Bill Gutknecht in Shaw's 2003-2004 signing class. The Green Wave have four seniors on the roster this season.
