NEW ORLEANS, La. - After a tremendous summer campaign, Tulane University junior Michael Aubrey has been named a preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the publication announced on Monday.
Aubrey was selected as a Utility player based on his stellar performance as a first baseman, designated hitter and pitcher for the Green Wave.
Aubrey played this summer for the U.S. National Team and was named Team USA's Athlete of the Year after leading the squad in the triple-crown categories and helping the team to a silver medal in the inaugural FISU World University Baseball Championships. He became the first player in Team USA history to hit over .400 with wooden bats. In addition to pacing the squad with a .405 batting average, Aubrey also led the National Team in hits (45), home runs (6), RBI (26) and runs scored (25).
Prior to his National Team stint, Aubrey produced a solid sophomore season with the Green Wave. He tied for third on the team with a .316 batting average, clubbed 15 doubles, hit seven home runs and drove in 52, while tallying 23 multiple-hit games, including six three-hit outings, and 15-multiple RBI contests, including a trio of four-RBI games.
On the mound in 2002, Aubrey was 8-1 in 11 starts before a back injury suffered in late April took him out of the pitching rotation. He tied a career-high with eight strikeouts at Memphis (April 6) and again the following week at UAB (April 13).
As a healthy freshman in 2001, Aubrey started all 69 games and earned National Freshman of the Year recognition from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and The Sporting News while garnering Freshman All-America honors from Baseball America, Baseball Weekly and Collegiate Baseball. He was second on the team in batting average (.361) and home runs (13) while ranking third in hits (100), doubles (17), slugging percentage (.592), total bases (164) and RBI (69), and fourth in runs scored (74). As a pitcher, finished fourth on the team in innings pitched (71.2), sixth in strikeouts (46) and seventh in ERA (5.15).
The Green Wave opens its 2003 schedule with a 10-game Turchin Stadium homestand beginning Friday, Feb. 7 against St. Joseph's. Season tickets are currently available by calling 504-861-WAVE.
