NAVARRE, Fla. - Tulane's Chris Wheeler capped off a fine freshman season with a final round of one-under par 71 Wednesday to finish tied for seventh at the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships with a 54-hole total of one-under par 215. The tournament was held at the par 72, 6,795-yard Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
Wheeler's C-USA showing, as well as his season-long role as the squad's top player, earned him a spot on the All-Conference USA team, making him the first Tulane men's golfer to earn all-league honors in four years, when Justin Alfond made the second team all-C-USA squad in 1998. Wheeler became the first Green Wave player to earn first-team all-conference recognition since 1996 when Jack Abney became the Wave's only previous C-USA first teamer.
TCU's Bret Guetz led the Horned Frogs to the Conference USA crown with a tournament record 11-under par 205 after a 71 Wednesday. Saint Louis' Evan Frederick was second, four strokes behind Guetz and was followed closely by Houston's Simon Robinson (third), East Carolina's Jason Harris (fourth) and Southern Miss' Tim Yelverton (fifth). Wheeler finished in a group of six players tied for seventh at 215.
TCU won the tournament by six strokes over runner-up Houston. Southern Miss finished third, five strokes behind Houston and five strokes ahead of fourth-place South Florida.
As a team, Tulane shot a combined 298 Wednesday to place 10th, five strokes behind ninth-place Memphis. The Green Wave defeated four other teams at the C-USA tournament for the first time since 1998. After Wheeler's 71, Tulane got a 74 from Cyril Coldefy while Mark Sullivan added a three-over par 75. Sullivan was Tulane's number two finisher in the tournament as he tied for 41st at nine-over par 225.
The C-USA Championship concluded the Green Wave's men's golf season.
