NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's 280 student-athletes posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 in the fall 2002 semester, marking one of the top terms overall in recent history, according to Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services Anthony Bennett. The Tulane cumulative grade point average rose to 2.92 after the fall effort.
The Green Wave Scholar-Athlete List for the fall semester includes 125 names as 45 percent of the Tulane student-athlete population earned a B average during the fall. In addition, 39 of those 125 qualified for the Academic Dean's List.
In terms of numbers, the Green Wave football team claimed a Tulane-high 28 Scholar-Athletes in the fall, while baseball placed 21 players on the list and women's soccer 17. Every Tulane team was represented by multiple student-athletes on the Scholar-Athlete roll.
The Tulane men's and women's golf programs once again led the way in team grade point averages for the semester while also maintaining their status as number one and two in the cumulative category. For the semester, Sue Bower's women's golf team compiled a 3.382 grade point average while Tom Shaw's men's squad followed closely behind at 3.360. As far as the cumulative mark goes, Shaw's club narrowly edged out Bower's by a 3.294 to 3.283 mark.
Tulane baseball compiled one of its top academic semesters under Rick Jones with a 3.256 grade point average for the term to rank third among Tulane teams. Men's and women's tennis, soccer and volleyball also each had team g.p.a.'s above 3.0 for the fall. Those squads were followed closely by three squads - men's cross country, women's basketball and women's track & field - who posted team marks of 2.9 or above. Overall, nearly every Tulane team achieved unprecedented athletic success during the fall.
"The fall academic marks are another indication of the commitment to the student half of the student-athlete equation by our students, especially, but also by our coaches and staff," said Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson. "These numbers, along with our graduation rates, tell a true story of the success of Tulane Athletics in the last year and I want to congratulate everyone involved. Now the challenge is to keep raising the bar."
Seven student-athletes in six different programs were singled out after compiling perfect 4.0 grade point averages in the fall. Twin brothers and football offensive linemen Joe and Matt Traina matched each other with perfect grade point averages in the fall. They were joined on the 4.0 list by baseball's Gerald Clark, soccer's Alycia Wanat, Lucy Wood of women's tennis, Justin Adendorff from the men's golf team and Ellen Vollmers, track and field.
In addition to the news on the g.p.a. front, Tulane had 12 student-athletes earn their undergraduate degrees in December, including three volleyball players, three football players, four track student-athletes and a pair of baseball players. Eight individuals graduated from the A.B. Freeman School of Business, including former track and field runner Alex Lakhanpal, who was a magna cum laude graduate in management, and 2002 football senior Seth Zaunbrecher, who graduated cum laude in the same field.
The Tulane Scholar-Athletes for Fall 2002 will be honored during an upcoming baseball game.
