AIKEN, S.C. - Tulane sophomore Chris Wheeler continued his hot play this spring by shooting an even par 71 in the first round of the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships being played at the par 71, 6,380-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Wheeler, the Conference USA Golfer of the Month for February, is tied for fifth behind individual leader Aaron Black from host USC-Aiken, who shot three-under 68. Vanderbilt's Mark Donnell is second with a 69, while Chris Marshall of Kansas and Kyle Bradley of the College of Charleston are at one-under par 70.
The Allen, Texas product won the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic in February and followed that with a tie for eighth at the LSU Spring Invitational. He has shot par or better in seven of his last ]eight rounds, including Monday's effort.
As a team, Tulane stands 12th in the 15-team field after combining for a 303 Monday in inclement conditions. In addition to Wheeler's 71, Tulane got a pair of 77s from Mark Sullivan and Bill Roach, Jr., while senior Phil Krass contributed a 78.
The College of Charleston leads the team competition after coming in at even-par 288 as a team. UT-Arlington, Kansas and USC-Aiken are tied for second at 291, followed by Furman and South Carolina in a tie for fifth. The Green Wave is three strokes behind 11th place Florida State and four behind 10th place South Florida.
Monday's first round was played in a steady rain which eventually forced the suspension of the second round, which had been scheduled for Monday afternoon. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes with the final 18 scheduled for Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
