
Women's Tennis Set To Host Conference USA Tournament

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed at this weekend's Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, according to the bracket released by the league office on Thursday.
Tulane will host the tournament at the Goldring Tennis Complex on campus, while also using courts at Dillard University for some consolation matches.
The Green Wave, ranked 28th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, are currently 14-4 overall and feature a trio of ranked freshmen. Julie Smekodub is currently ranked 32nd in the singles listings, while classmate Jenny Kuhn is listed 56th. Newcomer Erika Valdes is 103rd. In addition, Kuhn and Smekodub team to form the ITA's 9th-ranked doubles tandem.
Tulane, as the top seed, earned a bye in the first round and will open play on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Green Wave will meet the winner of the match between No. 8 seed UAB and No. 9 seed East Carolina at the Goldring Tennis Complex.
TCU, the defending C-USA Tournament champion, is the No. 2 seed, and the Horned Frogs are ranked 55th. Houston is the No. 3 seed, while Memphis rounds out the top four.
"We are extremely excited to serve as hosts for the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "This tournament has some of the nation's top teams and top players, so it should be an exciting event. This is a great tournament for our fans."
The tournament starts on Saturday morning, with matches at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., and runs through Tuesday. The championship match will be Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Tulane's Goldring Tennis Complex.
