BATON ROUGE - With back-to-back scores of four-under par 68, Tulane sophomore Michael Thompson is tied for third after the first day of the University Club Intercollegiate being played at the par 72 University Club Course in Baton Rouge, La. Tulane is tied for ninth in the team competition after the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Playing the same course where he won the LSU Spring Invitational in a playoff last spring, Thompson trails co-leaders Will Dodson of SMU and Chris Wells of host LSU by one stroke. He is one of a quintet of golfers at eight-under par 136.
Green Wave seniors Bill Roach, Jr. and Chris Wheeler also came in under par on the tournament's first day. Roach is tied for 16th at four-under par 140 after shooting 69-71 Monday. Wheeler's two-under par 142 (73-69) left him tied for 23rd. Freshman Andrew Freeman and sophomore Kyle Ritchie tallied scores of eight-over 152.
In the team standings, Tulane is tied for ninth with Mississippi State at seven-under par 569, three strokes behind eighth-place Auburn. SMU leads the event by five strokes over Arkansas, followed by Georgia Southern and Mississippi, who are tied for third, and host LSU.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Tuesday at the 7,205-yard course.
