NEW ORLEANS - Tulane sophomore Michael Thompson has been named the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Month for September after his victory at the Raising Cane Classic last month. It is the second time in his career that Thompson, a Tucson, Ariz. native, has earned C-USA Player of the Month honors. He also picked up the award as a freshman last March.
Thompson won the individual title at the Raising Cane Classic Sept. 20-21 in Hattiesburg, Miss. to earn his third collegiate victory. He shot rounds of 68-68-70 at the par 71 Canebrake Golf Club for a 54-hole score of seven-under par 206 in regulation. He defeated Ole Miss' Kyle Ellis with a birdie on the second playoff hole as all three of his career tournament wins have now come in playoffs.
Thompson was also named National Collegiate Player of the Week by Golf World Magazine in its October 1 issue. He was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year after tying for the Tulane team lead in stroke average a year ago. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships this summer where he advanced to match play.
After recording a second-place finish in the 16-team team race in Hattiesburg, the Green Wave most recently placed seventh at the Memphis Intercollegiate Oct. 4-5 in Memphis, Tenn. Thompson and his fellow Wave golfers will be back in action Oct. 18-19 at the Coca Cola Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, Tenn.
