NEW ORLEANS - Volleyball's Karlyn Daly, the 2003 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and Tulane's all-time leader in digs, and Michael Kogan, a four-time tennis All-American and four-time Conference USA Player of the Year, were named Tulane's Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year for 2003-2004 Monday at the fourth annual Varsity Ball, Tulane's all-sports awards banquet.
Tulane student-athletes from all 15 Green Wave sports teams were honored at the banquet held at the Radisson Hotel New Orleans as all 12 Tulane head coaches, as well as athletic director Rick Dickson, presented awards. Derek Mills, a 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 400 meters and a member of the Green Wave track and field coaching staff, spoke to the crowd of over 400 which included nearly all of Tulane's 2003-2004 student-athletes.
Daly and Kogan were among 43 seniors honored at the event. The Student-Athletes of the Year are nominated by the head coaches and selected by vote of the head coaches and athletics staff members.
Kogan holds the Tulane school records for singles and doubles wins and will lead the 19th-ranked Green Wave tennis team into the NCAA Regionals beginning May 14th. He has led Tulane to back-to-back Conference USA titles while collecting his unprecedented fourth-straight C-USA Player of the Year trophy.
In addition to her Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented for academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as community service, Daly was named the T-Club Female Athlete of the Year after leading the Tulane volleyball team to a 25-7 record and its most wins since the 1987 season. Football's Mewelde Moore earned the T-Club's Male Athlete of the Year Award after completing his Tulane career with 24 school records and seven Conference USA marks, including the Tulane career marks for rushing and all-purpose yards. The fourth-round draft choice of the Minnesota Vikings finished his Tulane career ranked 11th all-time on the Division I-A all-purpose list and is one of only two players all-time to compile more than 4,000 rushing and 2,000 receiving yards.
Dickson presented the 2003-04 Director's Awards to women's basketball junior Tymeka Moore and football senior Terrence Tarver. Selected by Dickson, the awards are given for outstanding effort, attitude and overcoming obstacles during their careers.
