Tulane Game 7
Jordan-Hare Stadium
Auburn, Ala.
Today's game marks just the second time in Tulane history that the Green Wave have played a game in Auburn, Ala. Tulane and Auburn have now played 37 times (Tulane leads overall series 17-14-6), but 27 have come in New Orleans (13-9-5), five in Montgomery, Ala. (3-1-1), two in Mobile, Ala. (0-2) and one in Gulfport, Miss (0-1). Today's game marks the first time the two teams have played on the Plains since Oct. 28, 1950, when Tulane defeated Auburn 28-0.
With 117 rushing yards against Auburn, junior running back Matt Forté eclipsed the century mark for his third consecutive game and fourth time in 2006. He becomes the first player to run for three straight 100-yard games since Mewelde Moore ran for 100 yards in five consecutive games from Sept. 27 to Nov. 1, 2003.
Forté's 100-yard day was the fifth of his career, and that moves him into a tie for sixth in school history along with Marvin Christanson, Doug Bynum and David Abercrombie.
After posting a career-best 11 catches last week at UTEP, senior wide receiver Preston Brown posted a career high in receiving yards with 139 courtesy of nine grabs against Auburn. In his last two games, Brown has hauled in 20 passes for 237 yards. Prior to today's ballgame, Brown's career-best receiving yardage total was 117 against Mississippi State on Sept. 17, 2005, in a "home" game played at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
Not be outdone, fellow senior wideout Damarcus Davis also posted a career-high in receiving yards with 126 on eight receptions. Prior to his performance against the Tigers, Davis' previous career-best was 100 yards on nine receptions against SMU.
With Brown and Davis posting career highs in receiving yards, the duo became the first wide receiver combo to each post 100 yard contests in the same game since Sept. 19, 2003, when Roydell Williams (114) and Chris Bush (107) accomplished the feat against Mississippi State in the Louisiana Superdome.
With a 21- and a 31-yard field goal against Auburn, freshman kicker Ross Thevenot has connected on a pair of field goals in the past two games. Overall, Thevenot has converted his last five field goal attempts, including a career-best 45-yarder against Rice on Oct. 7.
Junior wide receiver Fred Smith saw his first action of the 2006 season at wide receiver. After missing all of last year with a knee injury, Smith had been used exclusively as a return specialist prior to today's ballgame.
Junior defensive lineman Antonio Harris started his 29th consecutive game, the longest such streak on the Green Wave team. Sophomore center Michael Parenton, who saw his consecutive starts game snapped last week at 16, returned the lineup after missing last week's game at UTEP due to a stomach virus.
