NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane swimming & diving embarks on its most important meet of the season this week, when it travels to Houston to compete at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships will take place Wednesday, Feb. 15 to Saturday, Feb. 18 at the University of Houston Campus Recreation & Wellness Center (CRWC) Natatorium.
Competition opens on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with men's and women's diving prelims. Relay action will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will feature the 800 free and 200 medley relays.
"Our team is looking incredibly strong and sharp," head coach Katie Robinson said. "This [meet] is the pinnacle of our season and it's what we train really hard all year for. We should see some amazing swim performances from our women this week."
Last season at the 2016 AAC Championships in Houston, the Green Wave delivered an impressive performance across the four-day competition. Tulane finished second overall with a score of 637.50, broke school records on eighteen occasions, earned nine individual medals, and set over sixty personal bests. The second-place finish was the highest team placing since 2005.Â
While Tulane has been on hiatus from competition since its final meet of the regular season Jan. 27-28 in Baton Rouge, the team has spent just under three weeks preparing for its return to Houston to defend last season's second-place finish. The Wave earned three individual wins in the quad meet against LSU, Houston, and Rice, including freshman Olivia Johnson's two first-place finishes and sophomore Shelly Zelnick's top finish in the 200 back. Â
"We've learned a lot through from our regular season meets, and I believe that our character, patience, and teamwork has been strengthened," Robinson said. "We're going into the [AAC Championships] not just physically stronger, but also with a stronger backbone and ability to represent Tulane. I can't wait to show off all that we've worked for and it's going to be a really fun ride."
The competition also marks senior captains Ellie Sills and Joy Jason's final conference championship meet. Sills, who holds the school record in the 200 fly, and Jason, who has the second and third best times in the 100 and 200 breast, respectively, have led the team throughout the season and, for Robinson, are the embodiment of commitment and dedication.Â
"I'm so grateful to have coached them for the past four years," Robinson said. "They're incredible young women and there's no doubt in my mind that they won't have excellent performances [this week]. I can't wait to see them race with courage and heart, and lead this team as they have all season long."
