Dominik Koepfer to Represent Germany at Davis Cup Finals
Oct 21, 2019 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men's tennis alumnus Dominik Koepfer has been selected to compete for Germany at the 2019 Davis Cup finals, according to an announcement by team captain Michael Kohlmann.
The tournament takes place November 18-24 in Madrid, Spain and will played indoors at La Caja Magica. Germany will compete out of Group C along with No. 3 overall seed Argentina, as well as Chile.
Koepfer, who holds an ATP world ranking of 86, reached the second round at Wimbledon and the round of 16 at the U.S. Open this past summer in what has been a breakthrough season on the professional tour. The 2016 Tulane graduate is the first alum to compete for his native country at the Davis Cup since Victor Romero did so for Mexico in 2004.
"What an honor it is for Dominik to be selected to represent his country," Tulane director of tennis Mark Booras said. "I speak for the entire New Orleans and Tulane tennis communities when I say we are so proud of him and the incredible strides he has made as a professional."
Former Green Wave stars to also compete in the Davis Cup include Ham Richardson (seven times), Cliff Sutter (two times) and Ron Holmberg (one time) for the United States. Jose Aguero (Brazil, three times) Alberto Sottocorno (Bolivia, two times) and Victor Romero (Mexico, three times) are also former letterwinners to play for their respective countries.
Joining Koepfer on the team will be Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP 41), Philipp Kohlschreiber (ATP 79), Kevin Krawietz (ATP doubles 10)) and Andreas Mies (ATP doubles 12). Germany has won the Davis Cup title on three occasions - in 1988, 1989 and 1993 - and currently ranks seventh on the all-time list of champions.
The traditional competition will be held in the new format this year with a qualifying round and a final week. Germany secured one of the 18 spots in Madrid in early February in Frankfurt with a 5-0 victory over Hungary.
