Tulane Places Fifth in 2021 NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition
Apr 23, 2021 | General, Academic Services
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics continued its exemplary commitment to community service by finishing in the top five nationally in the NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition, sponsored by Helper Helper for the second consecutive year.
Last year, Tulane placed fourth in the national competition. In 2021, Green Wave student-athletes combined for 4,500 community service hours. It also marks the fifth straight year Green Wave student-athletes have ranked in the Top 25.
"Finishing in the top five in back-to-back years is no easy feat in the most ideal conditions," said Green Wave assistant athletics director for student-athlete enhancement Dr. Cornell Sneed. "To finish in the top five this year amid a global pandemic, while having the majority of our cornerstone events canceled and having limited off-campus projects, shows just how creative and passionate our student-athletes, coaches, and staff members are when it comes to serving our great city of New Orleans."
Among many numerous service initiatives, Green Wave student-athletes accumulated hours assisting with Excite All Stars Diversity and Leadership virtual workshops with Lake Forest Elementary Charter School, volunteering with United Through Sport, making cards for Cards for Hospitalized Kids, volunteering with the Power Coalition's 'Power Hour', organizing a Voter Registration Drive, hosting virtual Special Olympics practices, and virtually volunteering as English as a Second Language instructors and educational assistants at local schools and churches.
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. The competition, which ran from January through March, is based on the number of service hours completed and the number of participating student-athletes. Helper Helper tracks the school participation data throughout the competition.
