Oct 15, 2023 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – For the first time since the second week of the season, Tulane's football team (5-1, 2-0 AAC) is ranked this week. The program is ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press (AP) Poll and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, both polls recently announced.
The program earned the national ranking after defeating Memphis by a 31-21 score on the road on Friday. The win at Memphis was the program's first road win against the Tigers since the 1998 season when the team earned a 41-31 victory. The win in the city of Memphis was only the third time that Tulane has won there since 1998 (BYU in the Liberty Bowl by a 41-27 score). The road win was the seventh straight for Tulane. The victory tied the school record for consecutive road wins first set from 1930-32 and equaled in 1997-98. Tulane is 17-3 in its last 20 games. The 17 wins the last two seasons is tied for the third-most in the country along with USC, TCU, Washington, Penn State, Troy, Alabama and Ohio State.
Tulane started the season ranked in both the preseason polls at No. 24 in the AP and No. 23 in the Coaches' Poll. The program stayed at No. 24 in the AP Poll and moved up to No. 22 in the Coaches' Poll prior to the meeting with then No. 20/20 Ole Miss. After falling 37-20 the Rebels, the program fell out of the rankings although they continued to receive votes in each of the next four polls before again being nationally ranked this week.
Makhi Hughes led the offensive attack for Tulane against Memphis with a career-high 130 yards rushing and a score on the ground. Chris Brazzell III totaled a career-high 103 yards receiving.. Michael Pratt went 19-for-31 for 259 yards plus a passing and a rushing touchdown.
Tulane's defense leads the conference and is ranked sixth nationally in rushing yards allowed per game at 77.7. The squad also leads the conference and ranks eighth in the country in sacks at 3.33 per game. The program is placed second in the AAC in turnovers gained at 13. Individually, Lance Robinson leads the conference and is placed third in the country with his four interceptions. Darius Hodges and Patrick Jenkins are ranked second and third in the conference in sacks, respectfully. Valentino Ambrosio leads the conference with his 1.5 field goals per game. He also ranks second in the league in field goal percentage. Lawrence Keys III is placed second in the AAC in yards per catch at 18.91. Keys is also eighth in the league with his five touchdowns scored. Makhi Hughes is placed third in the conference in rushing with 498 yards. He is fifth in the league with four rushing touchdowns.
