Jan 29, 2024 | Football, General
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair David Harris and head football coach Jon Sumrall have been selected to ride as honorary marshals in Saturday's Krewe of Freret Parade by Captain Bobby Hjorstberg.
Barry Kern, of Kern Studios and Mardi Gras World, stated that Freret's fine selection continues its mission of honoring those who bring positive impact to our community.
A full rundown on the parade and its history can be found on KreweOfFreret.org, along with information on how to obtain a membership in the Krewe.
Saturday's parade will start Uptown at the intersection of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street, next to the legendary Tipitina's.
The parade will proceed north up Napoleon Avenue until St. Charles Avenue, where it will then turn east (right) and proceed along St. Charles through the Garden District.
The Krewe of Freret will follow St. Charles all the way to Harmony Circle, marking the entrance to the Central Business District (CBD), continuing up St. Charles. A brief stop at Gallier Hall marks the spot where a toast will be presented to the Mayor of New Orleans, a Mardi Gras tradition, before proceeding toward Canal Street.
At Canal, the parade reaches the world-famous French Quarter. It will then turn south on Canal and past Bourbon Street, continuing toward the Mississippi. The homestretch turn comes at the intersection with Tchoupitoulas and the parade comes to a conclusion as it passes through Krewe of Freret's Shorty Gras Concert.
Harris was named the Green Wave's new AD on November 21, 2023, while Sumrall was announced to his post just over two weeks later.
Previously, Harris had been the Director of Athletics at Northern Iowa since 2016, where he was tabbed an Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2021.
Sumrall became Tulane's 42nd head coach after a two-year stint at Troy University, where he amassed a 23-4 mark, two Sun Belt Conference titles, two conference Coach of the Year awards and a finalist nod as Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year.
