Pierce, Van Zyl Advance in AAC Fall Championships Doubles Draw

TOURNAMENT DRAW
HOUSTON – Tulane's Micah Pierce and Leigh Van Zyl were victorious in their first doubles contest at the AAC Fall Championships in Houston on Thursday.

The Green Wave duo won 8-4 over Temple's Marianthi Christoforidou and Thamara Frasser Kawaratani and will now see Florida Atlantic's Millie-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska at 9 a.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. That match's winner will face the victor of East Carolina's Ines Bachir and Xenia Jeromin versus Wichita State's Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli Saturday at 9 a.m. in the semifinal.

The American Individual Championships will be conducted for the first time in 2024 as the conference determines men's and women's champions in singles and doubles. The singles and doubles champions will represent the American Athletic Conference at the ITA Conference Masters Championships November 7-10 in Rome, Georgia.

Two singles players and one doubles tandem from each of the American Athletic Conference's 11 men's teams and 13 women's teams will compete for the individual titles.

In Thursday's singles matches, Van Zyl fell 7-6 (3), 7-5 to Vanessa Mellynchuk of UAB and will play Emily Meyer of Memphis in the quarterfinal backdraw at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Joining her in that round will be Pierce, who dropped a 6-2, 6-0 contest to Roselli and will see the winner of Jeromin and Stanislava Shulzhenko of North Texas.
