Sep 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
THIBODAUX – Tulane's Steven Rice picked up a pair of singles victories on Friday, the first day of competition at Nicholls' Battle Down the Bayou.
In the morning's "Etouffee" bracket, he knocked off Huruki Omari-Cowie of Lamar 6-2, 6-4 and then took care of Jay Temming (UNO) by the score of 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the second round.
On Saturday, Rice will face Fabian Anthin of Lamar in the third round. Anthin got there by beating Colin Tavaves (6-2, 6-2) of Nicholls and Joseph Townes (6-4, 3-6, 10-5) of UNO.
Green Wave teammate Charlie Burdell suffered a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Marcus Mail of UNO in the first round of the "Gumbo" bracket. He then got a bye in the backdraw and will play Nicholls' Max Linstedt on Saturday. Lindstedt lost to Leon Nickel of Lamar (6-4, 6-2) and then beat Remus Hebhang-Balan of Loyola 7-5, 6-2 on Friday.
Rice and Burdell then teamed up in doubles on Friday and won their first-round match over Mike Wood and Marcel Marki of Nicholls by the score of 6-4. The doubles competition will proceed in a round-robin format so Rice and Burdell are scheduled to face Lamar's Guy Dagan and Omari-Cowie first on Saturday followed by UNO's Temming and Townes.
Meanwhile, Tulane's Luka Petrovic and Luc Hoeijmans will represent the team at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa at the ITA All-American Championships. The tournament will have a singles draw size of the following: Singles Pre-Qualifying (128), Qualifying (64) and Main Draw (64). From this, ten players (10) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (eight main draw quarterfinalists & two feed-in consolation finalists).
Petrovic and Hoeijmans will be in action in the singles pre-qualifying draw on Saturday. Petrovic squares off with Chase Thompson of Notre Dame at 8 a.m., while Hoeijmans faces the Fighting Irish's Yu Zhang at 10.
