Perpetual Wave
Students, alumni and locals have enjoyed Tulane Homecoming in New Orleans' City Park since 2002, complete with a parade, food, bands and more. |
The existence of a Division I-A athletics program as an integral, and integrated part of Tulane University brings benefits to many areas of the university and the surrounding community. Athletics links diverse elements of the campus and its constituencies while building identity and school pride.
Tulane Athletics is a powerful vehicle that brings many groups - alumni, students, faculty, donors, fans and residents - together. Alumni across the nation and across the world rally around the Green Wave. Events are planned around Tulane broadcasts or games held in cities from New York to Los Angeles to Miami. Other activities, like homecoming and basketball games, bring alumni back to campus. Athletics also attracts followers who have no formal affiliation with the university aside from its sports teams, cutting across class, income, race and other demographic barriers.
Athletics also gives Tulane a footprint in the national, regional and local media on a regular basis, thus exposing hundreds of thousands of prospective students to Tulane University for the first time. In newspapers, on the Internet and through television broadcasts, Tulane Athletics serves as a window into the institution, its academic programs and other initiatives.
Tulane has played host to events like the Conference USA Volleyball, Baseball and Tennis Championships, as well as NCAA postseason competition, over the last several years. |
As the only Division I-A program in the city of New Orleans, Tulane athletics annually hosts nearly 200 events, bringing opposing teams and their fans into the city, and also attracting thousands of Green Wave fans. Tulane Athletics events have an annual economic impact of at least $42 million to the local economy, according to a 2003 study, without taking into account the indirect impact of the money spent by Tulane fans and alumni.
In addition to these benefits, Tulane Athletics serves other valuable purposes in the university - improving campus diversity through its student-athlete make-up, providing an outlet for student involvement and contributing to a well-rounded campus community, and producing highly successful alumni.
Overall, a successful, model Division I-A program like Tulane's serves as a showcase for the entire university, bringing diverse constituencies together in support of their school and its larger mission of education and service.
