NEW ORLEANS - Morgan Walker, who spent four years working in compliance at the University of Texas El Paso, has been named Assistant Provost for Student-Athlete Compliance and Academic Services at Tulane University. Walker will lead the Green Wave athletics department in the areas of NCAA compliance and academic support for student-athletes while working closely to integrate those efforts with other campus departments.
"We're pleased to add Morgan to our academic staff and especially pleased to develop this new role which will put him in close communication with different departments throughout the university," said Tulane Athletics Director Rick Dickson. "It's a great step forward in terms of promoting interdepartmental cooperation and understanding for the good of our student-athletes."
Walker spent four years at the University of Texas El Paso where he was Compliance Coordinator, Director of Compliance and then Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance as he made a rapid rise up the administrative ladder with the Miners. Prior to his arrival at UTEP in December 1999, Walker served at internship at San Diego State University for 18 months and was an athletics administration intern at the University of California, San Diego under the tutelage of former NCAA president and current NCAA Senior Woman Administrator Judy Sweet.
As a student-athlete at Morningside (Iowa) College, Walker was a member of the football squad who also served as captain of the track and field team, where he earned All-America honors. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from the school in 1988. He also earned a master's degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1996.
Prior to going into athletics, Walker was a Credit Manager at Wells Fargo Financial and spent five years in the U.S. Navy as a Division Officer aboard the U.S.S. Rushmore, an amphibious dock landing ship.
"Over the years, Tulane has set high standards in terms of academic performance of its student-athletes as well as graduation rates," Walker said. "I'm excited to be a part of the institution and looking forward to working closely with the coaches and student-athletes, and with the different departments and administrators on campus in this new and unique role."
Walker, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., began his duties at Tulane March 8th.
