Former Wave, NFL Linebacker Richard Harvey Returns to Tulane
March 26, 2001
NEW ORLEANS -- Richard Harvey, a former Green Wave linebacker who played 12 years in the National Football League, including three for the New Orleans Saints, has joined the staff of the Tulane Athletics Fund (T.A.F.) as Assistant Athletic Director for Revenue Development, Tulane Senior Associate Athletic Director J.D. Barnett announced Monday.
Harvey was a four-year letterwinner at Tulane from 1985-88 who led the team in tackles three of those four years and compiled 313 career tackles. He ranks sixth on the all-time list for solo tackles with 221. Harvey helped the 1987 Tulane team to an Independence Bowl bid in his junior season. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer information systems from Tulane in 1996.
The Gautier, Miss., native was drafted in the 11th round of the 1989 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills and went on to play 12 years in the National Football League, including three seasons (1995-97) with the Saints. He also played for the Bills (1989 and 1992-93), New England Patriots (1990-91), Denver Broncos (1994), and Oakland Raiders (1998-99) before spending last season with the San Diego Chargers.
Harvey was a player representative for the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) from 1993-2001 and was a member of that organization's executive committee from 1999-2001.
"It's exciting to have one of our football greats become a part of our staff and contribute to our ability to generate resources to support our student-athletes," Barnett said. "Richard has strong ties to the university and to New Orleans and we're happy to have him return to the Tulane family in this new role."
"I'm entering a new stage of my professional life, and it's great for me to be able to do that at a place that was such a big part of my development both as a person and as a player," Harvey said. "As a former Tulane student-athlete myself, I think I'll be able to bring a unique perspective to the job of raising support for current and future Green Wave student-athletes."
Harvey is part of a rebuilt staff at the Tulane Athletics Fund that also includes Barnett, Director of Donor Relations Susan Hudlow, and newcomers Julie Aguilar, Revenue Development Officer and Chris Wood, Data Control Analyst. A familiar name around Tulane Athletics, Lurlyn "Mrs. Fitz" Fitzpatrick, has moved over from the Football Office and is the T.A.F.'s new Executive Assistant.
"Julie Aguilar brings youth, energy, enthusiasm and tremendous experience in the private sector to our team and the addition of Chris Wood will enable us to provide much more efficient customer service to our fans, supporters and donors," Barnett said. "And of course we're honored to have Mrs. Fitz, truly a legend at Tulane, as part of the development team.
"It's exciting as we head into our Spring Fund Drive to have our team put together. We feel like we will be able to better serve our fans, supporters, and donors while generating the needed resources to enhance the lives of our student-athletes."
